的词汇中，同样可以归人te家族的还有波兰语herbata。herbata很有可能来自荷兰语herba thee（部分学者认为来自后期拉丁语herba thee。其他类似的词汇还有：白俄罗斯语garbata（这两个词的g-的发音均为的h-）和立陶宛语arbata。在现代标准汉语中，茶的发音为cha（阳平）。在中国北方和西南地区的方言中，cha的音调略有不同；在粤语中，在日语中，人们用cha指代这一深受欢迎的非酒精饮料，但会加上前缀o-。其他语言中，可以归人cha一族的茶的词汇包括：葡萄牙语cha，孟加拉语cha，藏语ja，女真语（15世纪）cha，以及20世纪英mgc队中的俗语“通过对这些词汇的地理分布的分析。源于闽南方言te的词汇主要通过海路传播到了欧洲和美洲（最早是荷兰商船：源于cha的词汇的传播也有类似的规律，或者从中国北方或西北地区通过陆路传到邻近地区，或者从粤语地区的港口通过葡萄牙商船传到了没有和荷兰、英国开展大规模贸易往来的地区，在越南语（trà：chà）和韩语（ta，cha）中，源于cha和te的茶的词汇同时存在，这两个地区和中国使用cha的地区邻近，这两个地区的港口又从中国使用cha的港口进口了很多茶叶，意大利语（cià）和英语（chaa）中最初曾使用过源自cha的词语。当时的旅行家和葡萄牙商人引人的，两个地区都改用了源自te的词汇，在全球迅速传播的一个称呼茶饮料的词是chai，这是外来语印地一乌尔都语cay转化成英语的形式。英国人引人了该外来语，人们使用chai时。一般会加上修饰语masala（香料），但即使单独使用chai一词时；人们通常也专指添加了印度香料（如豆蔻、丁香、八角茴香、胡椒、姜、肉桂等等）的茶，这一词是最近才流行起来的，北美区英语中最早出现了这一词汇，新一代传播茶和咖啡的商人又将其迅速传到了欧洲和其他地区，在很多语言中也有和chai联系密切的词，但他们最早时只是专指红茶，英语里有三个指代茶的词汇，tea：也有部分语言（如摩洛哥的阿拉伯语口语）保留了源于chai和te的茶的词汇。ashay一般指中东的普通红茶，chai和cha关系密切，的词汇演化中”解释-i为什么成为cha的后缀是最具挑战性、最复杂的问题，chai源自中文的茶叶（chaye）一词，chai是单音节词。有关茶的基本词汇中没有和chai相关的，最多只是借用欧亚大陆中心地带某个国家的词汇作为其语言的补充，或者在近代从南亚引入（见上文）。谁会是这一地区传播chai一词的使者？极有可能的答案是波斯语——这是蒙古帝国的通用语。与chai相关的词语也随处传播，这不应被视作简单的偶然事件。波斯语中表示“的词有一个长元音-a（cha。波斯语借用cha这一词时，cha本身就是长元音）；该词还有一个并列形式，词尾为-i或-y（chai或chay）。在10世纪的新波斯语中，这种以-a和-ay为后缀的名词之间的互换替用已经出现。这种现象在印地——乌尔都语中也存在。印地一乌尔都语从波斯语借用了我们现在英语中所用的chai一词。
