茶叶末釉之釉面一般呈失透状,釉色黄、绿掺杂,颇似茶叶细末,故名。

其形成机理是釉中的铁、镁与硅酸化合而产生的结晶。

茶叶末釉始见于唐代,当时耀州窑大量生产,器形有执壶及小盏两种;明代茶叶末釉属厂官釉范畴;清代前期御窑厂对茶叶末釉的烧造已十分成熟。

由于烧成上的某些差异,从而产生出许多变调,如蟹甲青、鳝鱼黄、蛇皮绿、鼻烟、新橘、鳖裙、黄斑点、老僧衣等,皆形容其色泽所似,现统称为茶叶末釉。

从传世实物看,以雍正、乾隆两朝产品为多见,其中雍正制品以偏黄者居多,俗称『鳝鱼黄』;乾隆制品则以偏绿者更为常见,俗称『蟹甲青』。

此后,茶叶末釉虽有继续烧造,但其质量已远不逮雍乾两朝。
